HOUSTON – A Houston-Philadelphia competition coinciding with the World Series is getting a lot of attention and it’s all for a good cause. Both major U.S. cities are impacted by food insecurity.
Philabundance challenged Houston Food Bank to a contest of who could raise the most funds during the World Series, a game to strike out hunger.
Houston Food Bank President Brian Greene said, “We are doing a little competition.”
Greene explained Loree Jones Brown CEO of Philabundance reached out to him to organize the battle of food banks.
Both organization leaders turned to social media to egg the other on. KPRC 2’s Zach Lashway and Charles Holmes stopped by Philabundance to speak with Brown in person.
“In this region, we serve nine counties, and more than half a million people each day make that tough choice between paying their rent or buying food,” Holmes said.
Brown said nearly one in three children throughout the greater Philadelphia area go to bed hungry.
According to Houston Food Bank, which covers 18 counties throughout Southeast Texas, and one in five children in that area is food insecure.
“Inflation has been particularly difficult for the people we serve,” explained Greene.
Brown said, “What we’re finding is our neighbors are more and more coming to access the charitable food network.”
