HOUSTON – KPRC 2′s reporter Bryce Newberry joined a panel of professionals on Crime Stories with Nancy Grace to discuss the high-profiled case of Sarah Hartsfield, who is accused of killing her fifth husband.
The 48-year-old woman has been charged in the death of Joseph Hartsfield, her husband of 11 months. He died in January at Houston Methodist Baytown hospital due to “complications of toxic effects of insulin,” according to the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Crime Stories with Nancy Grace released the episode “FIFTH HUSBAND POISONED DEAD IN NIGHT, other Hubbies feel ‘LUCKY,’” featuring Newberry on Monday afternoon.
In the nearly 50-minute show, Grace asked her panelists questions surrounding the case.
Other panelists joining Newberry included Sarah Ford, a legal director with South Carolina Victim Assistance Network; Dr. Shari Schwartz, a forensic psychologist specializing in Capital Mitigation and Victim Advocacy; Jason Jensen, a private investigator and cold case expert; and Dr. Kendall Crowns, a chief medical examiner at Tarrant County.
At 15:59, Grace asked Newberry to explain the events of the night Hartfield’s husband died.
“They were alone in their home in Beach City, Texas,” Newberry said. “The night before, the wife (Sarah Hartsfield) claimed she made dinner for him, one of his favorite meals, in fact, according to his family, broccoli, cheese and rice. And, then in the middle of the night is when the blood sugar started dropping pretty low and it wasn’t until 1 o’ clock in the afternoon, the next day, that the wife says she checked on him and he was unresponsive.”
Grace: “Ok, wait a minute, they were at home together. How much time passed? I mean, how long was he even unresponsive before she checked on him? When did she last see him alive and well?”
Newberry: “That’s something that’s not clear in the court document. It was around 8:30 in the evening she says that she made dinner and had him eat it, and then the next time that’s listed in these documents is 1 o’clock in the afternoon the following day.”
Grace: “And she was asleep on the sofa, correct?”
Newberry: “Yes, that’s what she says because she herself was recovering from a surgery and says that she was on narcotics at the time.”
