TEXAS CITY, Texas – A shelter-in-place has been lifted at the Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City Tuesday afternoon, according to city officials.
The refinery, which is located at 2938 5th Ave S, experienced a unit disruption, which caused a heavy smell of sulfur to fill the air.
Officials said all of Texas City east of 146 was under the shelter-in-place order for a short period while the issue was being resolved.

This incident comes more than one month after a deadly fire at the refinery, which killed one worker and injured another in May.
Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery is a refining complex that processes a wide variety of crude oils into gasoline, distillates, aromatics, heavy fuel oil, dry gas, fuel-grade coke, refinery-grade propylene, chemical-grade propylene and sulfur.
Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery issued the following statement regarding the incident:
The operational issue at Marathon Petroleum’s Galveston Bay Refinery has been resolved and all operations are stable. The refinery lifted the partial shelter-in-place that had been in effect at its facility and issued an “all clear,” and Texas City Emergency Management has lifted the shelter-in-place that it had issued for parts of Texas City. All refinery personnel have been accounted for and no injuries were reported. The health and safety of our workers, responders and the community are our top priority, and air monitoring continues at the facility and in the community as a precaution. A full investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of this incident.
Multiple agencies have conducted air quality readings and said everything appears to be normal at this time.
