New mother shot at Tabu nightclub had first night out in years when gunfire erupted

Police are still looking for the suspects.

HOUSTON – As Houston police look for four men involved in a nightclub shooting that killed one person and injured five others, one of the victims is sharing what happened that night only with KPRC 2.

The shooting happened in the early morning hours of June 11 at Tabu nightclub at 6003 Richmond Ave. The City of Houston filed a lawsuit and filed for a temporary restraining order days later to shut the club down, which was granted by a judge.

Techina Keller, 28, was shot twice in the foot that night and is still struggling to talk. It was her first night out in years, she said.

“I honestly hate talking about this because it makes me angry, it makes me feel like that I’m reliving it,” Keller said. “I’m traumatized. I’ve never been shot before.”

The shooting happened around 2:20 a.m., when Keller said several people, including herself, were trying to go home.

But more than two weeks later, the new mother is still stitched up, on crutches, and wearing a boot after being hit twice in the left foot with bullets.

“I felt the tingly, the burning and everything,” she said.

As she was “freaking out,” a woman Keller didn’t know, who she’d now like to thank, helped wrap and hold her foot while she waited for help from medics.

Houston police said an argument between four men inside the nightclub spilled into the parking lot and gunfire erupted. Six people were injured that night and one of them later died, according to the city’s lawsuit against Tabu.

Monday, police identified one of the suspects as 32-year-old Carl Douglas Green. He’s now charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon but hasn’t been caught.

Another man, shown in a surveillance video released by HPD, is considered a person of interest and the other men haven’t been identified.

“There’s people that (are) trying to live their life, there’s people that have kids. Like, what was your purpose of doing that?” Keller said.

She can’t work and said doctors have told her she may not be able to walk again, but she believes in a higher power and refuses to accept that.

“I’m scared to almost (walk) out the door. It’s traumatizing, I have dreams. I’m suffering,” she said.

Keller was out with her friend, who was not injured. She didn’t know any of the other shooting victims, one of whom has sued the nightclub after he went through several surgeries for bullet wounds, and claims that the club didn’t do enough to keep visitors safe.

According to the lawsuit filed by the city, the club has failed to take reasonable measures to abate criminal activity, which includes multiple aggravated assaults and shootings at the premises. The documents mention the shooting on June 11 saying, “the escalation of these shootings resulted in death on June 11, 2023, and six patrons becoming victims of gun violence.”

The property is owned by Pappas, which told KPRC 2 in a statement the recent events brought multiple lease violations to their attention, and the company was “working to terminate the lease as soon as possible.”

Police are asking for anyone with information about the men involved to come forward.
