713 Day: Houston’s unofficial holiday

A look at all things Houston

Happy 713 Day (KPRC 2 / Click2Houston)

HOUSTON – From the 832 to the 281 join your fellow Houstonian’s in celebrating all things Houston on 7/13. I’ve only been in Houston a measly four months but one thing I have learned about Houston is it doesn’t matter if you call it H-Town, Space City, or The 713, as long as you call it home, you are family. And I am so proud to be a part of this family. 🥰

So what makes Houston so amazing? Let’s start with the basics.

We have the astronauts! (I cannot help but say that in my best Arby’s impersonation of “We have the meats”)

Houston is home to NASA, which currently leads the International Space Station operations and missions. For those that are really into the launches, the Johnson Space Center offers a virtual guest program. According to it’s website, “as a virtual guest, you have access to curated resources, schedule changes, and mission-specific information straight to your inbox.” You can watch the launch up close and personal from anywhere in the world.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is like nothing you can experience anywhere else

The Houston Rodeo is the largest rodeo to take place around the world. With over two million visitors in attendance each year, the rodeo takes place over almost three weeks and includes everything from the Rodeo Parade and a Bar-B-Que Contest to massive headliner concerts and of course all things livestock. Even with years of rodeo experience under my belt I was astonished by the pure massiveness. I cannot wait to get the full experience this year. Do you have any recommendations for what not to miss? Y’all (yes I say ‘y’all’ now) the foooood 🍔

Houston is a melting pot of cultures and cuisine. The beauty of Houston is there is a place that can scratch the itch of whatever food craving you are currently having. From the Crawfish Shack to The Original Ninfa’s, there is always something new to try. What’s most incredible of all is that despite being incredibly tasty, it is also incredibly affordable. These restaurants exist in the other cities, but you have to look for them. In Houston, they’re everywhere.

“So many activities! It’s making my head spin how many activities we can do”

Houston is a giant, sprawling metropolis, so no matter how long you’ve lived here or how many r/houston rabbit holes you’ve gone down on Reddit, some local gems just slip right through your fingers. We’re here to shine some light onto the coolest Houston things to do this weekend instead of chasing Pokémon into oncoming traffic.
