1 dead after small plane crashes in west Harris County, strikes powerline

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – The man who died in a small plane crash Saturday night in west Harris County was identified by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Sherod Coleman, 49, was the pilot. Authorities said he was doing circles around the West Houston Airport as he was landing, then he crashed into a powerline.

Law enforcement said the crop duster style aircraft went down around 10:33 p.m. in the 17000 block of Groschke Road, and Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the area.

The crash caused significant power outages.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the crash investigation, and the Federal Aviation Administration will also look into the incident.

The FAA website said Coleman was a student pilot.

CenterPoint Energy said the outage caused by the crash affected 3,400 customers. Repairs were completed and power was restored at 12:52 p.m.
