KPRC 2′s own Keith Garvin was the emcee for the star-studded event.
“I am honored to stand before you tonight on behalf of all in my favorite city, what I believe is the greatest city in the United States of America here in Houston, celebrating HAUL’s 55th anniversary,” Garvin said in front of the crowd.
HAUL’s resident CEO, Judson Robinson, said being able to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the organization and its service to the city as well as the people who have helped is important.
“55 years of service to the same community, that means that their supporting the work of the Urban League, to have that kind of generosity in a community that has so much need, its important, its important that people understand what we do, why we do it, and the new work that has to be done to ensure that all people can rise,” Robinson said.
Robinson listed some of the biggest challenges that the Urban League is working to combat and help Houstonians with today.
“Housing affordability is a big big deal, ensuring that everyone has food on the table, things that we kind of take for granted or we used to, those things are becoming luxuries, so the ability to eat, to have a place to stay, to have a place to work, those need to be cornerstones of every American, every Houstonian, and that’s the kind of work that the Houston Area Urban League does,” he said.
Several other individuals were honored at Saturday’s event, including Tina Knowles, the mother of Houston’s own Beyoncé.
