Christina Dealejandro gives her 4-year-old son Kaleb a big ride on the swings to distract him from the reality that there won’t be much of a Christmas this year.
In fact, all Dealejandro’s four sons, 6-year-old Cameron, 11-year-old Adrian, 13-year-old Jaden and 4-year-old Kaleb have been on a hell ride with their young mother since she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer five months ago.
“So it’s invasive ductal carcinoma. Stage three. I’m HER2 positive, so it’s more aggressive and it grows faster. Pretty, pretty bad. It spread to my left notes,” she said. “And it’s a lot.”
Only months ago, Dealejandro was a healthy, athletic 29-year-old single mom, working for an auto parts company. But now, she is literally in a battle to save her own life, and the treatments are brutal.
“It’s horrible. I feel like I got, like, the closest I could explain to everybody is, like, either a house fell on me and broke all my bones, or I got hit by a car or train. Like it’s just excruciating pain,” she said.
But far beyond the pain and the fear, Dealejandro’s biggest fear is losing the life-and-death fight and leaving her four boys all alone.
“I’m thinking the worse, you know, am I going to beat it? Is it am I going to you know, I’m not going to beat it.,” she said. “What’s going to happen to my kids? Who’s going to take care of my kids? You know, I mean, there is no backup plan. Like, I’m I am the backup plan.
Facing several months of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, unable to work at all right now, and with absolutely no help from her children’s father, Dealejandro cannot afford to give her boys anything for Christmas this year.
