HOUSTON, Texas – There’s nothing easier than clicking a button and voila! A package shows up on your front porch.

That package that’s sitting outside your front door doesn’t have long before someone might steal it.

Over the last three months, 44 million Americans have had their packages stolen, according to findings from Security.org. A whopping $8 billion worth of goods have been stolen in the last calendar year.

The holiday season is no exception. With presents being shipped to nearly every doorstep, this is the Super Bowl for criminals looking to put your presents under their own tree.

Online retail giant Amazon has some tips that can help you make sure what you order ends up in your hands, not someone else’s.

The biggest thing you can do is track your package in real time. Amazon, along with most major shipping companies, offer updates on when your package is delivered. The quicker you can bring the package inside, the less of a chance crooks can steal it.

While placing you order, add additional delivery details that can help drivers find a hidden drop-off location.

“Through the app and website, you can provide specific instructions to delivery drivers, letting them know where at your home they should hide your package away from prying eyes,” Amazon said.

When you shop on Amazon, you can select a designated delivery day. This means that all your weekly packages can show up on the same day. Doing this can help you schedule around when packages might show up.

If you don’t want to risk your package sitting outside for a single minute, consider using an alternate delivery location. Amazon Lockers offer secure package pickup. Not all delivery services offer package pickup options.

Another way to keep tabs on your package is by sharing the delivery details with friends and family within the house.

“Consider providing tracking details with friends and family through Amazon Share Tracking, which allows you to share a link to tracking information via SMS, email, or messaging apps,” Amazon said.

When the package shows up, check for proof of arrival. Amazon will usually snap a quick photo when the delivery is done.

If you’re high-tech, consider using a Ring video doorbell or other camera system that lets you talk to the delivery driver. This is a great opportunity to offer specific instructions in real time.

If you’re willing to open up your home, Amazon delivery drivers have the ability to deliver in your garage in 5,000 cities across the country.

“To get started, link your garage to Amazon Key in the Amazon shopping app and turn on In-Garage Delivery,” Amazon said. “After adding items to your cart, select In-Garage Delivery at checkout to receive Amazon packages and groceries inside your garage.”

If you don’t have a garage, don’t worry. You can peek out the window to check on the delivery driver once Amazon offers a delivery window. Most orders come with a two to four-hour estimated arrival time for your package. Try and plan to be home around this time.

If you ever have issues with Amazon deliveries or other shipments, check with their customer service. All major shipping providers offer in-depth tracking systems that can pinpoint your packages location.

If your package ends up missing, Amazon encourages you to report thefts with local law enforcement.
