Powerball fever grips those looking for a massive Christmas payout

HOUSTON – Powerball perfection is what many were seeking at Rudy’s in Rosenberg on Christmas Day.

Millions across the nation hoping to land one final gift this holiday season, and it’s massive, nearly $640 million.

Pablo Rodriguez said he drove approximately 35 minutes from north Houston to purchase 20 tickets.

“I like the store,” said Rodriguez.

Workers at the convenience store were as busy as Santa’s elves. Most customers made it clear they were not too concerned about the numbers they ended up with after plunking down cash. Everyone simply wanted in on the action as the Christmas Day jackpot is one of the largest holiday jackpots ever.

For decades, Rudy has been known as the place to go to purchase lottery tickets. Its walls highlight the more than 20 times they have been listed as one of the top 10 lottery retailers in the state.

Outside the store there is a sign that reads, “#1 Lottery Seller in Texas.”

As for the odds of being the one that ends up with the jackpot? According to the Powerball Organization the odds are approximately 292 million to one.

“I know what the odds are but they don’t count,” Willie Funderburk said.

In order to get in on Monday night’s drawing, she drove 20 minutes from Katy with plenty of cash and confidence.

“I have already bought the winning ticket, it’s over there,”' said Funderburk, as she pointed to the ticket she purchased only seconds earlier.

The drawing will take place shortly after 10 p.m.
