HOUSTON – Despite the numerous warnings from law enforcement officials, more than 100 people across the Houston area still found themselves behind bars over the weekend for drinking and driving or for celebratory gunfire.

According to a post on X from the Houston Police Department, at least 104 people were arrested for DWIs in the city from Dec. 29 to Jan. 1. HPD officials stated that they will be updating that number on Tuesday, Jan. 2, following the holiday.
Chief Troy Finner stated that HPD received hundreds of calls about people who were discharging firearms across the city over the weekend. Initial numbers from HPD show that seven suspects were arrested for illegally firing weapons. HPD said that they were able to recover seven weapons from those individuals.

Finner also said that three people reported being struck by stray bullets over the weekend. It is unknown if they were shot due to random gunfire in the air.
HPD partnered with a multi-agency task force of law enforcement officials across Harris County to manage the New Year weekend.
