January off to rainy start; here’s this month’s weather outlook for the Houston area

HOUSTON – We’re only three days into January, but we’ve already had a rainy start to the new year.

“In two days, we’ve had almost one-third of the average rainfall total for the month,” KPRC 2 Meteorologist Anthony Yanez said.

The average amount of rain we get in the Houston area per month is about 3.76 inches. We’re also expecting storms this week and next week.

We first saw rain on New Years Day, then soaking rain arrived on Tuesday.

Galveston saw 1.52 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. Houston received 1.05 inches, Lake Jackson saw 1.27 inches, and Sugar Land got .96 inches.

Katy received .71 inches of rain and Conroe received .22 inches.

The amount of rain we’ve gotten is unique.

“January is typically a dry month, and only February and March are drier typically,” Yanez said.

Your plants are probably thankful for the showers, and this wet week is only helping us recover from the 2023 drought conditions.

Now for Friday, Houstonians should prepare their umbrellas. Storms are expected in the morning. There is also a street flooding threat for Houston, Galveston and east of Galveston.

By Monday, there is a severe weather threat. It’s still a bit early to know more information, but this could be the strongest storm so far for this year.

This is the same day as the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship. Be sure to watch out for weather updates if you plan to attend the event.

January is the coldest month on average for Houston, and you’ve probably already felt it.

The average high temperature for January is between 63-65 degrees, and on average, our low temperatures are around 43-45 degrees. 40 degrees is not too bad compared to the temperatures in 1930.

It was 5 degrees outside on Jan. 18, 1930, making this our coldest day ever in January.

The warmest day in January happened on Jan. 1, 2022, and it was a sizzling 85 degrees out.
