Building catches fire in Montrose possibly due to homeless person trying to stay warm

HOUSTON – A building caught on fire on Sunday in Montrose after a homeless person possibly started a warming fire, according to the Houston Fire Department.

The blaze happened at an abandoned building in the 3200 block of Yoakum at approximately 1:40 a.m.

Firefighters were called to the scene. They later arrived and saw large orange flames shooting into the sky from the roof of the two-story structure.

“When we arrived, there was fire coming out of the eaves. There was smoke showing from the roof. Engine seven got in there pretty quick (and) made an aggressive attack,” HFD Senior Captain Eddie Cruz said.

Firefighters contained the fire in about 15 minutes. They also made a hole in the roof to ventilate the building.

There was one person on the first floor when officials arrived, but there were no injuries.

HFD said there are several homeless people in the area, and the fire possibly could have started after a homeless person started a warming fire in the building.

Arson officials are still investigating the incident.
