It happened in the 17000 block of Cory Cornel Lane.
Deputies said they received a call around 6:52 a.m. from a child saying that someone was at the home shooting the child’s family members. Authorities said when they arrived at the scene, they found two surviving children hiding from the shooter.
According to Sheriff Eric Fagan, three adults and one 8-year-old child died in the incident. The shooter, identified as 46-year-old Alrick Barrett, then turned the gun on himself.
“This event is something that we pray that would never happen. This event is something that we pray that we can prevent, but something like this sometimes is non-preventable,” Fagan said. “We work hand and hand with the women’s center. Our detectives that were out there on the scene handled the scene with respect and dignity as much as we could to investigate what had happened. The family members had no idea what was going to happen.”
Investigators said Barrett was dropping a child back off at home following a visit. The child’s grandmother was trying to bring the child inside when Barrett asked if he could come in and the grandmother reportedly let him.
“Had no idea his intent,” Fagan said.
When the suspect saw his ex-wife, Fagan said he tried to “get reunited” with her. When the woman refused, the suspect took out a gun and began shooting, Fagan said.
Barrett’s ex-wife was among the victims killed in the shooting.
Deputies said the grandmother and two other children survived the incident.
