“It’s still surreal.”

HOUSTON, Texas – A mother and her infant son died in a early morning house fire in Houston’s Northside neighborhood on Saturday.

Family members tell KPRC 2 that Giovanna Cabrera, 31, died while trying to rescue her one-year-old son, Gabriel, from their burning house.

Houston firefighters were called to 218 Heaney Drive just before 5 a.m. on Saturday.

Cabrera was already able to rescue her other children, ages six and nine.

“She got the two kids, the nine year old and the six year old and then she was going back through for the baby,” said Cabrera’s sister, Giselle Bueno. “It’s still surreal. Like, I feel like she’s just somewhere else. Like I’m going to see her later on. This is, feels like just the house burned. Not, not, nothing happened to my sister or the baby.”

On Sunday, the community, family and friends all rallied together to support one another.

They sifted through what remains after the fire tore through and destroyed the home.

“A pastor and all the community from his church, came and helped us out,” Bueno said. “We’ve just been having family members and just friends. It’s all these people that are coming to help us. We just want to say thank you for everyone that has helped and everyone that has had so many nice things about my sister. We wouldn’t have thought that all of these people and everyone that’s donating and everyone that’s saying nice things and everyone that’s trying to reach out for help. It’s so unbelievable.”

The Houston Fire Department is continuing their investigation into what started the fire. It could take weeks or even months for this family to get an answer.

In the meantime, they’re surrounding one another with love and support.

Gage: “If you can talk to your sister one more time. What would you would you want to say?”

Giselle: ”That I loved her. I always told her that I loved her and I would always hug her. They were all, everything to me.”
