‘His music will live on’: Fans react to country singer-songwriter Toby Keith’s death

Country music singer-songwriter Toby Keith died on Monday surrounded by his family, according to a post on the musician’s website.

Keith had been battling stomach cancer.

His debut single was “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” and it was number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1993. It also reached number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Keith had several critics, but he also shined on the stage.

According to the Associated Press, Keith continued to perform, most recently playing in Las Vegas in Dec. 2023 while receiving cancer treatments. He also performed in the People’s Choice Country Awards last year.

Keith had many fans. Here are how some of them reacted to the news of his death on the social media site X.

“Just waking up to the news of Toby Keith’s passing. Today is a sad day for Country music and its fans. Toby was a huge presence in our business and someone we all looked up to and respected. You and your music will be forever remembered big man,” Jason A. wrote.

“Toby Keith is the definition of a real American. God Bless him!” Gunther E. said.

“Today we lost a legend. Toby Keith - his music will live on forever,” the Taste of Country news organization wrote.

“RIP Toby Keith. A true patriot,” Ryan P. said.

“May he rest in peace. We’ve lost a true patriot and a gentleman. He excelled at being both,” Katherine H. posted.

“He died from cancer. I knew he was sick. His music is great to listen to when going for a run in the summer under a blue sky and bright sunshine,” Hilma wrote.

“Thank you @tobykeith, you inspired me and the next generation of cowboys. We’ll ride on with you and make sure our flag flies high,” Dustin L. wrote.
