HOUSTON – Houston firefighters visited a north Houston neighborhood on Tuesday to share fire safety information with residents after a mother and her child were killed in a house fire in the area.
Giovana Cabrera, 31, and her 1-year-old son died in a house fire in the 200 block of Heaney Drive on Saturday.
However, the mother was able to rescue her 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter.
Following the tragedy, on Tuesday, firefighters talked about the importance of having home escape plans in case of a fire and working smoke detectors.
“We’re going to be installing a couple dozen smoke detectors here today. It’s important for us to do that because our job is to ensure that our community feels safe, especially after a tragedy like what occurred last weekend,” HFD Chief Samuel Peña said.
He said first responders were going to hand out 150 packages of information to people in the community. He also mentioned they want to focus on informing underserved communities.

“We will go out to certain neighborhoods especially the underserved areas to try to push this message out. Because that’s where we see the majority of fire related incidents. Unfortunately, like we have seen this weekend, we have had a large number of fire deaths in our community,” Peña said.
