HFD firefighter speaks after gun pointed at him, his partner, forcing them to jump off apartment balcony

Corey Grant is still recovering after a gun was pointed at him and his partner, and they were forced to jump from a second-floor apartment in Southwest Houston.

Grant, a Houston firefighter for nine years said he and his partner were responding to a medical emergency and attempting to take a patient dealing with seizures to the hospital when he allegedly pulled out a gun.

“The last thing he said is I need to get something else out of my room, goes back to the room that’s when I hear the pistol cock and that’s when he came back around the corner,” Grant said.

Grant said he and his partner were able to run back to their vehicle and call for help.

“My main thing was checking on my partner, making sure he wasn’t hurt. He said he didn’t appear to be hit so we didn’t know if the gun went off. He told me the only thing that was hurting on him was his shoulder and me, my elbow was the main area of pain,” said Grant,

Grant told KPRC 2 the scenario and outcome is one he’s replayed in his mind hundreds of times.

“The only thing, I hope that we as a department can take from this even though I’m going to take it with me the rest of my career is staying vigilant about your scene safety, staying vigilant about your situational awareness, paying attention to your surroundings because it’s easy to lose focus on that because you make so many calls,” Grant said.

Grant isn’t sure when he or his partner might return to work but said he wanted to make sure he was physically and mentally good to go before he does.

The man accused of pulling out the gun was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer.
