HOUSTON – Houston area civil rights activists are demanding an investigation into the incident involving a woman who was shot several times by two deputies who were looking into a burglary call at an apartment complex in east Harris County.
Civil and Human Rights activist Dr. Candice Matthews, Black Panther Chairman Quanell X, and Attorney Allie Booker held a news conference Friday morning to discuss the investigation.
What Happened?
On Feb. 3, a woman was shot by deputies at the Pines of Woodforest apartments at 90 Uvalde Road after forgetting her keys and breaking a window to access her home.
When the woman broke into her apartment, the downstairs neighbor reportedly called 911 to report hearing a possible break-in.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who were at the complex responding to a separate event, were then flagged down by the neighbor.
Deputies said they went over to the apartment to investigate and saw damage to a window near the front door of the apartment. Deputies said they knocked on the front door and announced their presence before entering the apartment unit.
When entering, one of the deputies allegedly saw a woman approaching the door holding a gun, and two of the deputies fired their gun, striking the woman.
The woman was transported to the hospital. Her condition is unknown.
Per HCSO protocol, the two deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
