Principal of the Year - Devin Adams (KPRC 2)

HOUSTONDevin Adams, the principal at Fleming Middle School, the campus in which KPRC 2 is embedded in for the school year, has won Principal of the Month for February.

Adams posted about the achievement, awarded to him by the Houston Independent School District during their monthly principal professional development meeting with the superintendent Mike Miles.

“At our Monthly Principal’s Development Meeting, each division recognizes three principals for excellence in leadership. I am honored to be one of three recognized from the Central Division this month. The Fleming Middle School staff trusts me as we work in tandem to ensure that a high-performance culture that meets the academic and social-emotional needs of our scholars is achieved daily. This is as much a recognition of their hard work as it is mine,” Adams said.

Adams has played a crucial role in implementing changes at Fleming Middle School under Miles’ New Education System model. The school has witnessed significant improvements in academics during Adams’ tenure.

In January, Adams sat down with KPRC 2 Anchor and Reporter Candace Burns and showed her just how much the campus had improved from August 2023 until January 2024.

Over the winter break, while most people were relaxing and enjoying their winter vacation, Adams was developing a ‘State of the School’ data plan for Fleming Middle School.

The plan compared students’ beginning-of-the-school-year test scores to mid-year scores in social studies, science, reading, math and the art of thinking. It also includes attendance, discipline, and the beginning-of-the-year testing results for math, science, and reading.

Adams reported improvements in most subjects and grade levels. Although there is still work to be done in some grade levels, Adams is confident in his plan to help the school achieve its goals. He explained, “We have been just below the average. While there was a slight drop in performance from the beginning to the middle of the school year, it’s important to note that the sixth grade has been a unique group. They are adjusting to the structure we have implemented.”

Adams’ dedication to his students goes beyond these achievements. He has been a part of Fleming Middle School for over four years, initially serving as the Dean of Instruction.

Before joining the Houston Independent School District and Fleming Middle School, Adams earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Prairie View A&M University and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of North Texas.

He started his career in education in 2014 as a math teacher in Manor ISD. Over time, Adams moved to Houston in 2016 and taught 8th-grade math, Algebra I, and Geometry at Welch Middle School. He also served as a math specialist at Hilliard Elementary School. Throughout his time in HISD, Adams received several accolades, including Campus Teacher of the Year, HAABSE Campus Teacher of the Year, PVAMU Top 40 under 40, and Achieve 180 First-year Assistant Principal of the Year.

Adams described himself as a lifelong learner and expressed his passion for being in the field of education. He actively participated in HISD’s initiative to improve struggling campuses. When he first joined the district, Adams noticed a decline in enrollment and parents opting for magnet schools in the area. In response, he developed an accelerated math program that brought Algebra I and geometry to a middle school level, enabling him to become an elementary school math specialist and eventually the Dean of Instruction at Fleming Middle School.
