HOUSTON – The 7-year-old boy who was shot inside Lakewood Church during an attack carried out by his own mother is now breathing on his own and has had a ventilator removed, according to family members.

Houston Police say Genesse Moreno went into the church at about 2 p.m. with her 7-year-old son on Sunday, Feb. 11. She had an AR-15, and she began shooting in the hallway. Two off-duty law enforcement officers approached her and returned fire, killing her.

Moreno’s 7-year-old son and a 57-year-old man were wounded.

In a Facebook post, Walli Carranza, the boy’s grandmother, said the boy was extubated 13 days after the shooting and is now breathing well.

Carranza said even though he is off the ventilator, he has developed other problems that may require another form of neurosurgery. Carranza said this will be the boy’s sixth neurosurgery after he was hit in the head by two bullets.
