According to Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite, officers responded to two separate robbery calls within a few minutes of each other. The first one was at an insurance business located in the 6800 block of Harrisburg followed by another one in the 6400 block of Brady Street.
Satterwhite said the description of the suspect was the same in both cases and police were looking for a man riding a scooter.
“We knew the officers in this area had been looking for this individual because apparently there have been three or four other robberies in this area with the same suspect description,” he said.
An officer later spotted the suspect and gave verbal commands to him. The suspect then attempted to flee the officer, who began to chase him.
The officer continued to give verbal commands as he was chasing the suspect. Satterwhite said the suspect pulled out a gun and started shooting at the officer. The officer returned fire and struck the suspect. The suspect died at the scene.
Satterwhite said no officers or bystanders were injured in the shooting.
The suspect is said to be a man in his late 20s or early 30s.
The officer is a 30-year veteran, according to Satterwhite. He will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
