Seven women sit on Texas Death Row for their crimes, but perhaps none more desperate than a little-known killer from a British territory who unleashed heartbreak in Harris County more than two decades ago.
Trying to avoid a breakup, Linda Carty devised a diabolical criminal plan to keep her man by telling him she was pregnant.
Trouble was - she wasn’t.
And the baby she wanted belonged to her 20-year-old neighbor Joana Rodriquez.
“She is prepared to take this baby,” says Josh Reiss with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. “Whether she cuts the baby out or whether she steals the baby. She doesn’t care. She’s getting that baby.”
With a ruthless determination, Carty got three men to snatch Joana Rodriquez out of her bed and kidnap her three-day-old son on May 16, 2001.
The baby survived, but detectives found Rodriquez suffocated in the trunk of a car.
Now, Carty sits on Texas Death Row waiting for an execution date that may never come because of international law.
