3-year-old in critical condition after Uber driver chases pickup truck following hit-and-run

HOUSTON, Texas – A hit-and-run crash involving an Uber driver left a 3-year-old child in critical condition Sunday night.

The crash took place around 8 p.m. in the 10270 block of the North Freeway near Deer Trail Drive and Gillespie.

Officials say that an Uber driver in a Toyota van was traveling with three passengers, a man, a woman, and their three-year-old child when they crashed with a Ford F-350.

“After the initial collision, the white truck fled the scene and the white van followed the truck,” Commander Michael Chaney said.

The two vehicles ended up on the North Freeway heading northbound before exiting onto the Feeder Road.

Investigators say that the pickup truck made a U-turn at West Road and then hit the curb and one of the columns.

The Toyota van tried to make the U-turn but crashed into a light control box and came to rest.

Grainy surveillance video from a Shell gas station captured the crash on camera and the aftermath.

Officers with the Houston Police Department arrested both the driver of the pickup truck and the Uber driver.

HPD said that the male passenger inside the Uber was taken to the hospital by ambulance and is in stable condition. The three-year-old child was also taken by ambulance to the hospital and is said to be in critical condition.

“The truck driver of the F-350 does display signs of intoxication so that is part of the investigation,” Commander Michael Chaney said.

At this time, no charges have been filed.

A spokesperson for Uber shared the following statement about the crash.

“The details of this crash are deeply upsetting. We are keeping those injured in our thoughts and wish them a full recovery. Road safety is a critical focus for us. We have removed the driver’s access to the platform while this investigation is ongoing and will assist police however, we can,” the spokesperson said.
