HOUSTON – NBC News and KPRC 2 have declared Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee the winner of the Democratic primary in Texas’ 18th Congressional District on Super Tuesday.
Jackson Lee has held the position for nearly 30 years. She has served 14 straight terms in this role since 1995.
Former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards challenged Jackson Lee in this year’s election.
“I have fought for the people of the 18th Congressional District every day of my service and today they fought for me, and so I am winning the seat to be reelected to go back to the U.S. Congress,” Jackson Lee said.
Jackson Lee officially joined the race back in December after being defeated in the Houston mayoral race against John Whitmire. She says losing the race didn’t deter her but instead motivated her.
The congresswoman said she has made an effort to be by the people’s side who are in need of service and make sure those voices are heard and empowered.
She also thanked her family, friends, supporters and President Joe Biden for their support.
As of Tuesday morning, her opponent has not conceded.
