Taking “Project Highwayman” to SXSW - Day 0: The Long Road Ahead...

We arrived in Austin for the first day of our 9 day trip to pitch our sci-fi/horror podcast to creators and studios at South By Southwest

AUSTIN – You know that moment in a movie when the lead packs up her bags.. heading to the big city for their big break? Well, this feels like a seven-day free trial of it. Although today isn’t the first day of SXSW, the crew and I are using this time to set up how these next few days are going to be for us.

For anyone new to the story, I am a producer for KPRC 2 News who works behind the scenes. On the side, I have been working on this passion project called “Project Highwayman,” a sci-fi/horror podcast. You can find our interview about the show right here.

I took I-10 before hitting State Hwy. 71 before picking up Isaiah and finally arriving in Austin!

Ever since I was a kid, this has always been my dream. Making a project, going to events like these, and meeting creators much like me. Knowing that I’ve been doing it for around two years gives this trip an extra edge. I think back to those moments when I was writing my own stories in college. That’s kind of where it all starts.

Jacob, Isaiah and I first met at college at Texas Tech University (Wreck ‘Em!). During that time we worked on several projects from 2018 to 2021. Since then we hadn’t seen each other in the same room in four years. Around six months later, I got a message from Jacob asking to be a part of this project.

Hundreds of online meetings, dozens of rough drafts, and thousands of files on Google Docs later, here we are!

Right now, we are sitting around the table and working out the plan for tomorrow.

There are four of us, Jacob, Isaiah, Bailey, and me. Here’s what we have so far for the trip: we have a partially done pitch deck with a few final touches, an elevator pitch nearly committed to memory, hundreds of business cards, both for us individually and for the project, and two years and a half of work...all coming down to these next few days
