Woman dies after being shot multiple times at car club meetup near SE Houston park

The victim has been identified by family is 19-year-old Makala Lacy

HOUSTON – Houston police are investigating after a woman died after being shot while enjoying a car club meetup event across the street from Grimes Park in southeast Houston.

The shooting happened in the 5100 block of Reed Road, very near Grimes Park on Houston’s southeast side. It happened around 6:45 p.m.

Her family has identified her as 19-year-old Makala Lacy.

“She was a happy go lucky kid,” her mother Chandra Williams told KPRC 2. “That was my only girl. My baby.”

According to Lt. J.P. Horelica with the Houston Police Department, officers arrived to find the woman in the median with multiple gunshot wounds. The officers had to go through a crowd of people to get to the woman.

Officers and other first responders attempted to provide medical aid to the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Horelica says they were able to find out who the alleged shooter was from witnesses and what he was driving.

Horelica said they were able to contact the alleged shooter on the phone and he gave a statement to them and told them he was going to turn himself in at a police station. HPD said he turned himself in a couple hours after the shooting and is being interviewed, but no charges have been filed.

According to Horelica, the woman who died was was shot at least three times while a large crowd was in the nearby park and at the car club meetup.

“Usually there’s no violence involved in them,” Horelica said. “This is a rarity where there’s actually a shooting at one of them.”

Williams said Lacy had asked to use her truck today and said she would be home by 6:30 p.m. She never made it home.

“I just want to say to the coward that shot my baby...It will be justice for Makala,” Williams said.
