BELLVILLE – People have been flocking to the charming town of Bellville to take tours of Newman’s Castle since it opened in 2008.
The hidden gem in rural Texas started as a dream by Mike Newman, who longed to build a castle after exploring Europe in his early 20′s. He broke ground on the project in 1998, even though Bellville residents thought he “was crazy.”

But Mike persisted and became king of his own castle. The one-of-a-kind custom creation features a moat with a working drawbridge, a chapel, a dungeon, and more. He also owned Newman’s Bakery, which many guests visit for a sweet treat after touring the castle.
“It makes people happy. They leave with restored faith that they can do anything,” Mike said on his website.
He touched the lives of many people, and when Newman’s Castle announced that he had passed away at the age of 68, tributes immediately began pouring in.

“What a special man! Such an incredible place to visit, I’m sure the town will miss his presence,” Leah Martin commented.
On his obituary, Margie Lovell remembered him fondly.
“Mike had a heart of gold! I wonder how many thousands of people were introduced to Bellville thanks to his bakery and castle! He ‘knighted’ many little boys and girls! He was unique in his own way, and I counted him as a good friend. My condolences to his sweet Mom and family of dear friends. May he rest in peace,” the tribute read.
Newman’s Castle posted on Facebook that Mike will be laid to rest on Tuesday, March 19th, at First Bellville Baptist Church.
Details surrounding Mike’s passing weren’t immediately available.
