HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Law enforcement have increased patrols around Galena Park ISD’s Cunningham Middle School after a man followed a student and inappropriately touched himself.
In a letter sent to parents, Galena Park ISD said this happened near the school Tuesday morning.
“I was shocked, I was thinking about the kids wondering what they were going to do to make the school safe,” said parent Shaina WIlliams.
The letter said a female student and another community member noticed a man following the girl. The man was described as skinny in build and was wearing black pants and a black shirt.
“The community member reported that the male began touching himself inappropriately. The female student was eventually assisted by the concerned community member and safely entered the school building,” the letter said.
Galena Park ISD said once the student and community member were inside the building, they reported the incident to school administrators and the Harris County Pct. 3 School Resource Officer.
“The School Resource Officer attempted to locate the suspect; however, the individual had left the area. Harris County Precinct 3 Constables have increased patrols in the area,” the letter said.
“The letter explained they would be providing more security and more patrol in that area,” said parent Andrea Brown.
The district reminds parents to discuss the situation with their children, so they know how to respond if they ever find themselves in a similar situation.
The district shared some safety tips for children:
- Try to walk with a group of friends.
- Watch for things that are happening around you.
- Never go near a stranger’s car.
- Never accept candy or a ride from a stranger.
- Never tell strangers you are going home to an empty house.
- Report anything unusual immediately to a trusted adult if a parent is unavailable - police officers, teachers, principals, firefighters, a store clerk, or a security guard.
