HOUSTON – In a recent incident that has alarmed parents, an 8-year-old girl died after she was caught in a pool drain pipe at a hotel pool in northwest Houston, raising concerns about the safety protocols in place at such facilities.

Aliyah Jaico’s drowning, which occurred Saturday night, serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in swimming pools, especially for young children.

Jaico’s body was found in a drain pipe that feeds the pool after an hours-long search for her at the DoubleTree hotel on Northwest Freeway and Pinemont Drive.

According to a witness, the girl was reportedly trapped inside a pipe in the pool. Police said her body was recovered after the pool was drained.

The hotel pool is closed until further notice, and inspectors from Houston’s Health Department were back on site Monday morning. Inspectors found several violations..

KPRC 2 Investigates’ Mario Diaz spoke with officials with the Houston Health Department and learned the pool was last inspected in June 2023.

That inspection found two doors in the poor area did not latch but were fixed that day.

The hotel also had to put an emergency device into place that day that people could easily understand how to use in case they needed to call for help.

How rare is a pool drain entrapment?

Pool drain entrapment is a rare but serious and sometimes deadly occurrence. When a child’s body or limb covers a pool drain, the suction force can be powerful enough to trap them underwater, making it difficult for them to escape without assistance. In some cases, the force of the suction can be so strong that it can cause severe injuries or even drown the victim.

Experts emphasize the importance of pool safety measures to prevent such incidents. One of the most effective ways to mitigate the risk of pool drain accidents is through the installation of proper safety equipment, including compliant drain covers and anti-entrapment devices. These safety features are designed to minimize the suction force of pool drains, reducing the likelihood of entrapment.

Parents can also play a crucial role in ensuring their children’s safety while swimming in public pools. Parents are encouraged to educate their children about the potential dangers of pool drains and other hazards in the water. Encouraging children to swim away from pool drains and teaching them how to recognize and avoid dangerous situations can help prevent accidents.

In addition to education and awareness, parents should always supervise their children closely while they are swimming, especially in public pools where lifeguard supervision may be limited. By keeping a vigilant eye on their children and staying alert to any signs of distress, parents can intervene quickly in the event of an emergency.

Pool operators and managers also have a responsibility to prioritize safety and implement strict protocols to prevent accidents. Regular inspections of pool equipment, ongoing staff training, and clear signage warning swimmers of potential hazards are essential steps in maintaining a safe swimming environment.

Prevention and safety measures

Pool drain accidents occur when a swimmer’s body or limb covers the drain, creating a suction force that can trap them underwater. This circumstance, known as drain entrapment, can result in injury or drowning if the victim is unable to free themselves from the suction.

To prevent pool drain accidents, several safety measures can be implemented:

1. Installation of Compliant Drain Covers: Properly designed drain covers can reduce the suction force of pool drains, minimizing the risk of entrapment.

2. Anti-Entrapment Devices: These devices are designed to prevent swimmers from coming into contact with pool drains, further reducing the risk of entrapment.

3. Education and Awareness: Parents should educate their children about the dangers of pool drains and teach them how to recognize and avoid hazardous situations in the water.

4. Supervision: Close supervision of children while swimming is essential to ensure their safety and allow for quick intervention in case of an emergency.

5. Regular Maintenance and Inspections: Pool operators should conduct regular inspections of pool equipment to ensure that drain covers and safety devices are in good working condition.

6. Staff Training: Lifeguards and pool staff should receive proper training on pool safety protocols and emergency procedures to effectively respond to incidents.

By implementing these safety measures and promoting awareness among parents and pool operators, the risk of pool drain accidents can be significantly reduced, helping to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience for everyone.
