HOUSTON – Temperatures are heating up across the region this week.

By the end of the week, we may even see some areas hit the 90 degree mark.

On top of the heating temperatures, we are heading further into April, which means your allergies are probably getting worse.

Here’s what we are seeing.

Temperatures are starting to get, dare I say, hot.

Most of the week, we will be in the middle to upper 80s. By Friday, some places in southeast Texas may even hit that 90 degree mark.

The mornings also won’t bring much relief with low temperatures only falling to the low to mid-70s. A cool front will move through at the end of the weekend and drop those lows back into the upper 50s, but until then, we remain on the toasty side.

Allergies acting up?

Unfortunately for seasonal allergy sufferers, the trends are not good. We are now in the middle of April, the time when trees and grass begin releasing more spores. These spores are the reason many people are seeing their allergies get worse. The chart above shows the pollen count for today. Grass is by far the worse, but all categories of pollen have gotten worse in recent days and weeks.

The Houston Health Department tracks pollen counts Monday through Friday. While weed and tree pollen counts have improved slightly from last Friday, which is the last time a reading was taken, grass pollen count is still high and mold spores have also increased, although mold is still in the medium category.

This is typical for this time of the year when plants get more active in releasing spores into the air.

There are some steps you can take to help if you are suffering with seasonal allergies. Make sure you take allergy medication daily. Also, change your clothes often, especially if you are outdoors. Pollen can cling to your clothes. Keep your doors and windows closed. Try to avoid mowing the lawn or pulling weeds. It is also good to know that the evening hours have the lowest pollen counts in the air, so if you want to do any outdoor activities as an allergy sufferer, these hours may be the best times for you.

The week ahead and the next chance for rain

Planning forecast (Copyright 2024 by KPRC Click2Houston - All rights reserved.)

Outside of a small chance for a shower on Tuesday, most of the week looks to be dry. The temperatures, as previously mentioned, will be heating up with some areas potentially hitting that 90-degree mark come late in the week.

Our next chance for rain arrives this weekend as a storm system begins to impact the area. Right now, we have a 40% chance of rain on Sunday. These numbers will be refined as we get closer to the weekend.
