By the numbers: Spike in Texas antisemitic assaults, harassments, vandalism

In the wake of heightened tensions following the Oct. 7 massacre in Israel and the ongoing conflict in Gaza, the Jewish community across south Texas and the United States has faced an alarming surge in antisemitic incidents.

We’re breaking down the 2023 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents by the Anti-Defamation League by the numbers.

  • 8,873 - The number of antisemitic assaults, harassments, and vandalism reported to ADL in 2019 is a 140% increase over 2022 and represents the highest number since ADL began tracking this data in 1979.

  • 65 - Total number of incidents recorded from Houston to El Paso in 2023, that occurred after Oct 7.
  • 106 - Number of incidents ADL Southwest recorded of antisemitic assault, vandalism and harassment in 2023.
  • 73 - Antisemitic assaults, vandalism and harassment incidents that ADL Southwest recorded in 2022.
  • 5,204 - number of antisemitic acts nationally since Oct. 7.
  • 161 - Antisemitic incidents in which Jewish people or people perceived to be Jewish were physically attacked and accompanied by evidence of antisemitism in 2023, a 45% increase from 2022.
  • 24 - Number of anti-Jewish incidents per day in the U.S. With those incidents, the 12-month total for 2023 exceeded the three previous years combined.
  • 6,535 - Cases of antisemitic slurs, stereotypes, or conspiracy theories used against Jewish people or people perceived to be Jewish in 2023.

  • 1,117 - The number of incidents with swastikas, which are generally seen as symbols of antisemitic hatred, is up 41% from 2022.
  • 2,177 - Incidences of antisemitic vandalism, defined as property damages with evidence of antisemitic intent or impact on Jews, rose 69% from 2022.
  • 1,987 - Compared to 2022, when there were 589 incidents targeting Jewish institutions, there was a 237% increase in 2023. In the fall of 2023, antisemitic bomb threats surged dramatically, with a majority targeting synagogues.

A combined 48% of all incidents occurred in these five states:

  • 1,266 - California
  • 1,218 - New York
  • 830 - Jersey
  • 463 - Florida
  • 440 - Massachusetts

  • 1,161 - Number of antisemitic propaganda distributed last year, with white supremacist groups also increasing their activities.
  • 1,009 - Bomb threats against Jewish institutions increased dramatically in 2023, exceeding 91 in 2022 by over 1,000%.
  • 3,162 - Of the 8,873 incidents reported in 2023, 3,162 represented 36 percent of the total incidents referencing Israel or Zionism. This represents a significant increase over the 241 incidents reported in 2022, which made up 6.5% of the total incidents.
  • 1,540 - The majority of Israel-related antisemitic incidents occurred in public places, such as libraries, public transportation and on the street.
  • 644 - College and university campuses that were the site of Israel-related incidents.
