HOUSTON – In the latest rankings from US News & World Report for 2024, two Houston ISD high schools have secured spots among the state’s top 10 public secondary schools.
Carnegie Vanguard High School claimed the No. 5 position, while DeBakey High School for Health Professions secured No. 8. Additionally, both schools were recognized nationally, with Carnegie Vanguard ranked at No. 31 and DeBakey at No. 70 out of nearly 17,660 charter, magnet and traditional public schools.

Carnegie Vanguard High School’s curriculum includes an academic program comprising Advanced Placement, pre-AP courses and honors electives. Students at Carnegie Vanguard typically undertake a challenging course load, often completing at least 10 AP courses before graduating. Students are required to perform community service as part of the school’s commitment to community involvement.
DeBakey High School for Health Professions is known for its excellent academic record and comprehensive educational approach. Students at DeBakey are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in careers in healthcare through a specialized curriculum.
