TRINITY COUNTY, TX – The severe storm that hit Trinity County on Sunday night came so fast and was so fierce, Tanya Kervin had little time to react. She huddled with her mother in the hallway of their home.

“I was screaming,” she told KPRC 2 photojournalist Cesar Martinez.

“We heard the wind blowing,” Kervin said. “All you could hear were trees shaking around, like hitting the ground and everything. The house was shaking. It took the wood out of my mom’s window, just, like, sucked it out of the window. It was horrible.”

Her family has a lot of tree damage on their property, but they’re in much better shape than their neighbors directly across the street whose trailer was flattened.

The National Weather Service confirmed Monday afternoon that the damage was from an EF-1 tornado.

Kervin says she already knew what caused the damage when they saw debris swirling around.

“We seen that my husband was standing at the front door. It also ripped our front door off the screen door, but you could see. And he thought it was just a, a mini blast. And I was like, no. And I said, and I kept looking across the street, I said, their house is gone. And he said, well, I said their house was gone. There’s nothing there that,” Kervin said.]

The Kervins have quite a bit of tree damage in their yard, but Tanya says they’re fortunate the trees missed their cars and their home.

“We’re just thankful to be alive.”
