SUGAR LAND – Lisa, a single mom from Sugar Land, talks about her beautiful, brave, 15-year-old son.
We will call him George, but we are hiding his real identity because he is a minor who was born with a very rare brain condition that has left him unable to speak.
He is also mentally delayed and has Autistic qualities and is a special needs student in the Harmony school system.
But what is tearing Lisa apart is not knowing what happened to her son on January 17th at the Harmony Science Academy Houston where he is a freshman.
Lisa says when she went to pick him up from school that day and when she arrived he was clearly injured.
She says he had a large red mark across his face, a large burn mark on one hand and she would later discover a busted lip.
Lisa was horrified and furious that the school never notified her by phone that her child was injured or how he was injured.
“When the teacher brought him to me he had this large red, burn mark on one hand. He had a huge red mark stretching across his face that looked like he had been slapped and he, I would later discover, had a bloody, split lip,” Lisa told KPRC 2′s Bill Spencer.
Lisa says she was stunned and when she asked the teacher how it happened she was told her son showed up at school that way.
Lisa says there is no way her son looked like that when she dropped him off from home.
Afterwards, Lisa says she took her son to the hospital and that Child Protective Services was called to investigate the injuries.
Lisa also filed a case with the Houston Police Department, and Lisa says that case is still open.
I (Bill Spencer) spoke with Harmony Charter school officials today who tell me that multiple state agencies have been called to look into this incident and that no fault has been found at this point with anything the school or school employees did.
The school does not have video cameras in any of the classrooms, so there is no video record of what actually happened or didn’t happen.
A statement from Harmony Schools reads:
We are aware of concerns that have been shared by a parent of a student at Harmony Science Academy-Houston. At Harmony Public Schools, we are deeply committed to the safety of all our students and take parent concerns seriously. Throughout the past several months, we have been in frequent contact with the parent regarding the matter. We also have worked closely with local law enforcement, Child Protective Services, the Texas Department of Family Services and the Texas Education Agency regarding this matter, each of which has determined that there is no conclusive evidence of wrongdoing on behalf of Harmony or its team members.
Still Lisa believes her son was assaulted by someone at the school and she wants to know who is responsible.
She says the Houston Police investigation is still open and she wants answers.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare and I am sick of it. I trusted that school to take care of my child,” Lisa said.
