Seeking shelter from the rain? Here’s where you can turn

May 2, 2024: The American Red Cross opened shelters in Liberty, Polk, San Jacinto and Montgomery Counties in response to the recent flooding due to rain and the rising waters around the rivers (American Red Cross)

HOUSTON – Flooding is still ongoing in several areas of southeast Texas and the Red Cross has opened shelters for those who have been forced to leave their homes.

According to a press release by the American Red Cross, several shelters have been opened in Liberty, Polk, and San Jacinto Counties in response to the flood waters.

“This flooding is affecting many of our communities,” Shawn Schulze, Regional Chief Executive Officer of Texas Gulf Coast Red Cross said. “The work that our Texas Gulf Coast Red Cross teams and partners are doing is ensuring that each struggling family has a warm meal, a safe place to sleep, and a ton of hope, comfort, and care!”

What to bring to a Red Cross Shelter

  1. Prescription medications
  2. extra clothing, pillows, blankets
  3. hygiene supplies
  4. important documents
  5. comfort items
  6. any special items for children: diapers, formula, toys
  7. durable medical equipment and or assistive technology you may need

Additionally, Conroe County Judge Mark Keough announced on social media that Hyatt Regency in Conroe will offer a disaster rate of $120 to any Montgomery County residents in need of shelter.

“I’m very grateful to the city council for graciously working with us on this,” Keough said in his social media post. “My Office of Emergency Management is currently working to get shelters open to accommodate displaced residents and pets. We will announce locations as soon as they come online.”

Montgomery County Animal Shelter also says it will be offering assistance for residents with pets, and their parents during the severe weather at the following locations:
