Hunt underway for man who killed girlfriend, shot at deputy, and took patrol car for joyride in Houston Museum District

HOUSTON – Like something you’d see out of a movie; a search is underway for a man who shot his girlfriend to death Tuesday in Houston Museum District and then got in two gun battles with a deputy constable.

According to Asst. Chief J. Anderson with the Houston PD, it all started a little after 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of MacGregor and Almeda. Firefighters with Houston FD were reportedly fueling up one of their trucks when they noticed a domestic disturbance between an unidentified man and woman as they walked into a store.

When they came out, firefighters told police the argument between the couple turned heated. That’s when they saw the man chasing the woman in the store’s driveway before shooting her about nine times. She was rushed to an area hospital, where police say she died from her injuries.

Further investigation revealed the couple has a history of domestic violence but Asst. Chief Anderson was unsure (during the press conference) how many cases were reported.

The firefighters flagged down a nearby constable deputy with Harris County Precinct 7 to report what happened. During this time, the gunman got in a black Chevy Camaro car, which authorities later revealed to belong to his girlfriend, and took off. He didn’t get far though, according to Asst. Chief Anderson, because a deputy tried pulling him over, but the man began shooting and a brief gunfight ensued.

During the gunfire exchange, the officer reportedly took cover, so the gunman got into the deputy’s patrol car and drove away.

Police say the unidentified shooter returned to the scene moments later to get the Camaro back but got into another gunfight with the deputy constable.

Asst. Chief Anderson said at least Pct. 7 constable deputy was injured after he fell and hit his head during the gun battle, so he was taken to the hospital but is OK.

Around 8 a.m. Tuesday, HPD’s homicide detectives confirmed they found the car abandoned on 610 near Kirkpatrick in northeast Houston, so the gunman is still at large

Police have described the gunman as armed and dangerous, and say they have a good understanding of who he is, but are still encouraging the public to share any information they may have to help track him down.
