Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center sees increase in animals following severe weather

The Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas is already dealing with the aftermath of Thursday’s severe storm, having taken in nearly 100 wild animals, primarily baby birds. As the community begins cleaning up after the storm, the Center is anticipating a continued influx of injured and orphaned wildlife over the next few days.

The Wildlife Center is currently providing essential care to hundreds of wild animals. They shared some tips for helping distressed wildlife.

How to help orphaned or injured wildlife:

• Carefully place the animal in a box with soft rags and a warm (not hot) water bottle, a rice sock, or a heating pad set on low until it can be safely transported to the Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas.
• Do not attempt to feed or give water to any distressed wildlife, as they may have water in their lungs or other serious injuries.
• Keep the animal in a warm, quiet environment away from household noise and pets until it can be taken to the Wildlife Center.

Other ways to assist:

• Clean birdbaths and refill them with fresh water.
• Provide extra birdseed or suet in your yard.
• Check under trees for injured or orphaned wildlife that may be hidden under fallen branches and bring them to the Center as soon as possible.
