Remembering Uvalde on 2-year anniversary of deadly Texas school shooting

UVALDE, Texas – It’s still a jarring thought to know one of the deadliest school shootings in American history was just a couple of years ago because the pain has yet to subside.

LATEST: Families of Uvalde school shooting victims agree to $2 million settlement with city

On KPRC 2+ Now at 8 a.m., our Zach Lashway and Sofia Ojeda looked back on the tragic day when 19 students and two teachers were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Both reporters covered the event at different times but still recalled how heavy their hearts were for the families impacted.

Days before the 2-year anniversary, families of those victims filed a $500 million federal lawsuit against nearly 100 state police officers who were part of the botched law enforcement response to Robb Elementary School.

The families said they also agreed to a $2 million settlement with the city, under which city leaders promised higher standards and better training for local police. It is the first lawsuit to be filed after a 600-page Justice Department report was released in January that cataloged “cascading failures” in training, communication, leadership, and technology problems that day.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
