Jessica Anderson, Assistant Chief with the Houston Police Department, said they received calls of an assault in progress from inside the home saying someone was possibly shooting.

At approximately 2:42 p.m., a neighbor called 911 to report gunshots and also that a man had come outside and told them to call the police.

Officers arrived shortly afterwards and were immediately fired upon by the suspect from the driveway.

“It appeared that the suspect was waiting outside in an ambush style, waiting for the officers to arrive to shoot at them,” Anderson said.

An officer’s vehicle was hit seven times by bullets from multiple weapons. Anderson said pistols and rifles were found at the scene.

The officers retreated and continued to receive gunfire for another minute before the suspect stopped shooting, possibly from running out of ammunition. The suspect then walked towards the officers with his hands up and was taken into custody. No officers were hurt and no officers returned fire at the suspect.

Officers entered the home and found two children hiding inside a closet. They were unharmed.

A woman was found inside the home dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Anderson said the woman and suspect were related. It is unclear what led up to the shooting, but based on some of the things the suspect said to officers, it is possible he was going through some sort of mental crises.

The investigation continues.
