Heights neighbors worried about crumbling storage unit damaged in recent storms

‘It’s just an accident waiting to happen’

At the corner of north Main Street and East 25th Street in the Heights, sits a storage unit that is crumbling from top to bottom. It was damaged after the derecho two weeks ago.

Miranda Sevcik lives across the street. She said the metal door hit her son’s truck while he parked next to the unit.

She added that the damage appears to be getting worse, and more debris keeps falling as storms continue to roll through.

“Every time we get a major storm, or anything rolls through here, or anything with wind, more of the building falls,” Sevcik said.

Sevcik contacted 3-1-1 Wednesday evening. By Thursday morning, the city responded to her request. They told her an inspector will be at the property by 5 p.m. on Friday.

“The responsiveness has been really encouraging,” said Sevcik.

The city encourages those in similar situations to also contact 311. They said an inspector will check the property and notify the owner of any changes that need to be made.

If the owner does not want to make improvements, they have the choice to demolish their property. If they fail to make any improvements, the owner could face citations.

KPRC 2 Reporter Corley Peel got in touch with the company who owns the property, The Pro Amigo. Employees said they plan to have the damage cleaned up by next week.
