The suspect fled the scene on a bicycle with the toddler but was spotted by officers about a half a mile away from the home, police said. Before officers could engage with the suspect, they say he pulled out a pistol and shot himself.
He was in surgery Friday afternoon and is expected to survive and also expected to face charges.
Officers found the woman’s body in the back of the home.
The child was not physically hurt in the shooting and has been placed in the custody of a grandmother.
