HOUSTON – TAKEOVER is an original KPRC 2 News documentary that chronicles a year of change in the Houston Independent School District under Superintendent Mike Miles and the New Education System (NES).
Produced by KPRC 2 anchor Candace Burns, photojournalist Wladimir Moquete and digital content specialist Ninfa Saavedra - the film tells the story of state control through the eyes of the students, parents and teachers at Fleming Middle School, where our team had exclusive classroom access during the 2023-2024 school year.
The exclusive screening took place at the historic DeLUXE Theater in the Fifth Ward community and featured some of the film’s stars, including Fleming Middle School principal Devin Adams, math instructor Lyndsy Mason, and honor student DeArthur Edwards and his mother. Following the screening, the documentary’s stars and producers had the opportunity to dine with several KPRC 2 Insiders, allowing them to discuss the documentary and NES/HISD with the guests.
