It happened shortly after midnight on Forest Acres near E Mt. Houston. That’s where a man, identified by Sheriff Ed Gonzalez as 46-year-old Hector Ruiz, was playing a dice game with other people.

At some point, investigators say several individuals approached Ruiz demanding money and were shot in the process. Responding officers found Ruiz at the scene with several gunshot wounds and confirmed he died from his injuries.

We’re told Ruiz was an employee at the business and a regular dice game takes place, which may have encouraged the gunmen. Investigators described the shooters as younger men, who took off in a light-colored SUV.

Anyone with information on the gunmen is asked to call HCSO’s Homicide Unit 713-274-9100 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477)
