WALKER COUNTY, Texas – Parkgoers in Huntsville will have to wait a little longer to return to Huntsville State Park.
The popular park and campground in Walker County announced Tuesday via their Facebook page that reopening has been postponed until June 11th. The extension is due to ongoing safety concerns and extensive storm damage from recent severe weather.

On June 1, teams from Entergy arrived at the park throughout the day, with 12 teams initially reported. A park host counted 18 trucks on-site by morning. As a result of the numerous power lines and poles located in the woods, specialized teams and equipment were needed. By Sunday evening, power had not been restored despite their efforts.
According to park staff, the weekend park crew worked diligently to remove downed trees in the Day Use area, but much more work remains. Campsites and roads were inspected for potentially hazardous trees. It will take an additional week to remove these hazards and ensure visitor safety, according to the park superintendent.
The park leadership has initially decided to extend the closure until June 4 due to ongoing safety concerns. As the park staff cleared downed trees and stayed on the lookout for more, they still had no power and downed lines in the campsites.
