Harris County considers raising minimum wage for all employees

Commissioner Rodney Ellis proposed a significant change Tuesday to the county’s minimum wage policy.

In 2019, Harris County increased the minimum wage to $15 an hour for its employees.

Now, Commissioner Ellis aims to extend this wage increase to all employees, including contracted workers.

Currently, some contracted employees, such as janitors cleaning county facilities, earn as little as $10 per hour. Ellis’s proposal seeks to ensure fair pay for all workers, regardless of their job or how it is funded. This includes setting wage standards for contract workers beyond construction projects and making wage information more transparent.

The county’s spokesperson mentioned that there is no exact number on how many people will be affected by this proposal. However, the goal is to update policies to ensure fair compensation and adjust wages according to the cost of living.

A vote on this proposal will take place today during the Commissioners Court meeting at 10:00 a.m. T
