HOUSTON – A man has been taken to a hospital after being shot in the leg after police say he fired a gun at officers responding to a burglary call at a West Houston apartment complex.

The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. at 2630 Tanglewilde Street.

According to Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir with HPD, they got a call from a woman who was alerted by a Ring doorbell camera of three masked men who kicked in the door of her apartment.

Two officers responded to the scene to investigate. What the officers didn’t know, according to Bashir, is that the woman also called a family member.

“They arrived at this location, they were not aware that another family member was at the scene,” Bashir said.

As the officers entered the complex and headed toward the unit, they turned the corner and saw the man down the hallway.

“For whatever reason, we don’t know what the motive is, he raised a firearm and discharged his weapon at the officers and we have evidence to back that up. The officers returned fire, they discharged a weapon multiple times and when the scene was safe they approached the suspect and provided medical attention by providing a tourniquet to stop the bleeding,” Bashir said.

Bashir said the man was struck in the leg and was transported to a hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Several bullets also went into other apartment units. Officers checked on the residents and learned no one else was hurt.

The two officers will be placed on administrative leave pending to outcome of the investigation, which is standard protocol in situations where officers fire their weapons.

It is unclear what charges the man will be facing right now, but Bashir said the responding officers were in full HPD uniform.

As far as the three suspects involved in the burglary, Bashir says they were gone by the time officers arrived. They don’t have much information on them right now other than they were men.
