Police were alerted to the shooting at around 4:15 a.m. Thursday, when a call was made to report a shooting on Airline Drive on the northside of Houston. Officers said they found a man dead in the employee parking lot when they arrived.
At least four shell casings were found at the scene.
Investigators believe the victim—who was an employee in the area but has not been officially identified—confronted the two men as they attempted to steal a golf cart. A struggle ensued, and the victim was shot in the parking lot. An armed security guard was reportedly near the scene, but she was unable to draw her weapon before the gunmen escaped.
The employee has been described as being in his 40s, while the shooters are believed to be in their teens.
The Houston Farmers Market opens to the public at 6 a.m. but reportedly opens early for deliveries. For that reason, investigators believe the killers knew that the door would be open, so they got inside but it’s unclear if they took anything.
As the investigation continues, the Houston Farmers Market said it will be closed until further notice.
As of this writing, the shooters remain at large, and police have shared photos taken from surveillance video to ask the public if they have any information on their identity to come forward by calling 713-222-TIPS (8477).
This is a developing story and will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.
