GALVESTON – Four people have drowned at Galveston beaches since Memorial Day, with the most recent tragedy occurring on Sunday when a 20-year-old woman lost her life.
The incident happened near the 47th Street jetty, where the Galveston Beach Patrol and several other agencies began searching for the woman after she fell into the water. She was brought to shore, and medics attempted to save her, but she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Lt. Austin Kirwin of the Galveston Beach Patrol shared important safety tips for beachgoers planning a trip to Galveston this summer.
“We definitely recommend if it’s nighttime, we don’t recommend going to swim. If you do want to swim, pay attention to where you are and look around what’s in front of you,” Kirwin said. “We do have all these rock jetties that are here in Galveston with the posted signs and flags that prevent you from walking in that area.”
Beachgoers are advised always to swim with a buddy and pay close attention to the signs and flags along the beach to ensure their safety.
