Jury selection to begin for murder trial of ex-Houston cop Gerald Goines who led botched Harding Street raid

HOUSTON – Jury selections for the murder trial of former Houston Police Department Officer Gerald Goines, the man at the center of the 2019 deadly botched raid on Harding Street, will begin at the end of the month.

On April 3, a Harris County grand jury reindicted Goines on two felony murder charges in connection to the deadly Harding Street raid a week after Harris County Judge Presiding Judge, 482nd District Court, Veronica Nelson attempted to throw out the original indictments.

Goines’ defense lawyers argued that the original indictments should be dismissed because prosecutors did not specify which section of the tampering law Goines was accused of violating. They claimed this omission put Goines at risk of being tried for an offense other than the one for which he had been indicted.

Judge Nelson then granted the defense’s motion to quash the indictment, which was reversed a week later.

In 2019, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office charged Goines with murder after Houston Police Department investigators determined the drug raid that killed homeowners Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas was based on lies and a bogus warrant created by him.

“We are not going to bring the family back to life, but we are going to hold the people responsible who should be held responsible,” said Ogg in an interview with KPRC 2 Investigates in 2019.

Goines, who is free on bond, is also charged with theft and four counts of tampering with a governmental record. His trial is set for Sept. 9.
